Seven years ago, college freshman Joey Romano swerved to avoid a car while skateboarding and broke his wrist. Romano called an Uber instead of an ambulance because of poor insurance and cost concerns. Driver Beni Lukumu helped Romano into the car, took him to urgent care, and then to the emergency room when the injury proved serious. Lukumu insisted on driving Romano to the hospital at no charge, signed him in, and stayed by his side for several hours, missing work. Romano received pain medication and felt comforted by Lukumu's presence; the two later became close friends.
