FCC Changes Website Language After Brendan Carr Hearing
"The FCC's official website scrambled to remove language calling it an independent agency just minutes after a Democratic senator confronted the agency's chairman about it. In a heated exchange during a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) pressed FCC Chairman Brendan Carr for a yes-or-no answer on his opening question. Is the FCC an independent agency? Lujan asked. He added, Yes or no is all we need, sir."
"Carr tried to continue his answer, but Lujan again interjected informing Carr that his agency's own website had clear language on whether it was independent. Just so you know, Brendan on your website it just simply says, man, The FCC is independent,' Lujan said. This isn't a trick question. The FCC is not, Carr replied. OK, so is your website wrong? Lujan asked. Is your website lying? Possibly, Carr said."
Sen. Ben Ray Lujan pressed FCC Chairman Brendan Carr for a yes-or-no answer on whether the FCC is an independent agency during a Senate Commerce Committee hearing. Carr attempted to explain legal tests but Lujan repeatedly interrupted, citing the FCC website's language stating the commission 'is independent.' Carr ultimately replied, "The FCC is not an independent agency." Minutes after the exchange, the FCC website removed the phrase describing the commission as independent. Axios reporter Sara Fischer captured a screenshot showing the original wording at 11:52 a.m. ET and noted the language was gone by 12:08 p.m.
