Gay Treasury secretary could start international incident with bizarre Canadian annexation statement - LGBTQ Nation
"I think we should let them come down into the U.S.,"
"Alberta is a natural partner for the U.S. They have great resources. The Albertans are very independent people."
"People are saying, people are talking, people want sovereignty, they want what the U.S. has got."
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent advocated that Alberta should declare independence from Canada and potentially join the United States. He made the remarks during an interview with Jack Posobiec, described as an anti-LGBTQ+ and antisemitic podcaster and Pizzagate promoter. Bessent called Alberta a natural partner with great resources and described Albertans as very independent, and he referenced rumors of a referendum with people wanting sovereignty and U.S.-style governance. The president has pushed for Canada to become the 51st state since the 2024 elections, increasing tensions and prompting a boycott of American products and travel. Alberta is a conservative province with a United Conservative Party majority.
