Charlie Kirk was shot during an appearance at Utah Valley University and was later pronounced dead; the alleged shooter remains at large and reportedly fired from 200 yards away. Matthew Dowd suggested that Kirk's rhetoric contributed to the violence, arguing that hateful thoughts lead to hateful words and then to hateful actions. Greg Gutfeld refused to explain, defend, or mock that victim-blaming and agreed that hateful words can lead to hateful actions while saying Dowd was right for the wrong reasons. Gutfeld criticized aggressive partisan rhetoric that labels opponents as evil, called Dowd's timing strange, and said the shooting does not help the left while acknowledging uncertainty about the shooter's motive.
