Here's how the population changed by US state in 2025
"South Carolina's population grew 1.5%, driven by more people moving in from elsewhere in the US than out to other areas of the country. Meanwhile, Vermont shrank 0.3%, due to more deaths than births and more people moving out elsewhere in the US than moving in from other areas of the country."
"A Census Bureau news release said that the overall population increased in each of the four regions, but the Midwest was the only one where every state climbed. "From July 2024 through June 2025, the Midwest also saw positive net domestic migration for the first time this decade," Marc Perry, senior demographer at the Census Bureau, said per the news release. Perry added that while more people moving in from elsewhere in the US than leaving for somewhere else in the country was modest in the Midwest, 'this is still a notable turnaround' from previous losses."
"The US population increased by just 0.5%, the lowest uptick since 2021. The Census Bureau's Christine Hartley said this was mainly because net international migration - the number of people who moved into the US rather than out - plunged to 1.3 million from 2.7 million."
Population estimates from July 1, 2024, to July 1, 2025 show most states grew but at a slower pace than in 2024. South Carolina recorded the highest single-year growth at 1.5%, one of five states with at least 1% growth, driven by net domestic in-migration. Vermont declined 0.3% due to more deaths than births and net domestic out-migration. The Midwest was the only region where every state increased and saw positive net domestic migration for the first time this decade. National growth edged up 0.5% as net international migration fell sharply to 1.3 million.
