ICE to withdraw from Maine after Susan Collins holds talks with Kristi Noem | Fortune
"There are currently no ongoing or planned large-scale ICE operations here,"
"I have been urging Secretary Noem and others in the Administration to get ICE to reconsider its approach to immigration enforcement in the state."
"ICE operations in Maine have failed to improve public safety and have caused lasting damage to our communities. We will continue working to ensure that those who were wrongfully detained by ICE are returned to us,"
Enhanced ICE enforcement operations in Maine have ceased, with no ongoing or planned large-scale ICE operations reported in the state. ICE and Border Patrol will continue their normal, long-standing operations. The enforcement surge led to more than 200 arrests since last week and began with an operation called "Catch of the Day." About 50 arrests occurred on the first day and roughly 1,400 people were identified as operational targets. Maine has about 1.4 million residents, approximately 4% foreign-born. Lewiston's mayor described the operations as disastrous and seeks the return of those wrongfully detained.
