The mayor is happy, Trump continued. He's a Democrat mayor, the mayor is happy. At a Friday presser, Young was asked by a reporter to respond to the president's comments."
"Yeah, that was an overstatement, he said, to scattered laughter across the room. I am focused on the resources: FBI, DEA, ATF, he continued. Those are the things that I believe will truly help us be able to support law enforcement and reduce violent crime. I do not support the National Guard; however, they are coming. It's not the mayor's call."
President Donald Trump announced on Fox & Friends he would send federal forces, including the National Guard, to Memphis. Trump said the mayor was happy, calling him a Democrat mayor. Memphis Mayor Paul Young called that statement an overstatement while speaking to reporters. Young said he is focused on federal resources such as the FBI, DEA and ATF to support law enforcement and reduce violent crime. Young said he does not support the National Guard but acknowledged the deployment is not his decision. Young requested details about timing, size, duration and appearance of the deployment and noted a recent drop in city crime.
