Donald Trump intends to implement a 50% import tariff on Brazilian goods starting in August. This decision has ignited strong reactions within Brazil due to concerns over economic implications. The tariff threat has been tied to the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who faces charges related to a coup attempt. Bolsonaro's supporters had previously attacked Congress and the Supreme Court, and he has yet to recognize the election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Trump condemned Brazil's treatment of Bolsonaro, claiming he is a victim of political persecution.
"Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro," Trump wrote Monday on his Truth Social platform. "He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE."
Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress and the Supreme Court in the capital, Brasilia, vandalizing both buildings. To this day, Bolsonaro refuses to acknowledge Lula's election win.
