San Jose advances plan for ICE agents to identify themselves - San Jose Spotlight
"For too long, immigrant families in San Jose have lived under the shadow of fear, not because they have done anything wrong, but because of the federal government's indiscriminate targeting of immigrant families in the state of California,"
"This is not law enforcement. This is blatant intimidation."
Masked federal ICE agents arrested one person at an ICE check-in facility on Blossom Hill Road, according to Rapid Response Network witnesses. The Rapid Response Network reported no further ICE activity nearby. District 5 Councilmember Peter Ortiz said immigrant families in San Jose live under fear because of federal targeting and described the arrest as blatant intimidation. Councilmembers Ortiz, Rosemary Kamei, David Cohen and Pamela Campos proposed a policy requiring all law enforcement, including federal immigration agents, to unmask and wear identifying information when operating in the city. The Rules and Open Government Committee unanimously advanced the proposal to the full City Council and directed the city attorney to draft a policy within 60 days while requesting the San Jose Police Department report all responses to ICE activity.
