"Some swing voters who supported President Trump in the 2024 election say Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are going "too far" in carrying out deportation orders after an officer shot and killed Renee Macklin Good in Minneapolis earlier this month. On Tuesday, NPR observed online focus groups with 14 voters from Pennsylvania who supported Joe Biden in 2020 and then swung to Trump in 2024."
"Rich Tau, president of Engagious and the moderator of the focus groups, said he observed "a lot of frustration with ICE and how ICE has been performing around the United States" with these Pennsylvania voters. "There was widespread awareness of what happened to Renee Good on Jan. 7," he said. "You have a big division in these groups. It shows that there's an underlying frustration with how things are going and how things are being executed in the United States.""
Fourteen Pennsylvania voters who backed Joe Biden in 2020 and swung to Trump in 2024 participated in online focus groups. Seven identified as Republicans, six as independents, and one as a Democrat. The groups were part of the Swing Voter Project run by Engagious and Sago, with NPR as a partner. Eight voters said ICE was generally "getting things about right," while six said ICE had "gone too far"; none said it had "not gone far enough." Rich Tau, president of Engagious, said he observed widespread frustration with ICE's performance. Most participants had seen video of the Minneapolis shooting; opinions on blame were divided.
