Amazon Prime Video's 'The Boys' began as a satirical take on celebrity culture but transformed into a critical commentary on authoritarianism following Trump's election. Creator Eric Kripke reflects on how the character Homelander embodies fascism intertwined with celebrity, representing a broader societal evaluation. As the show's final season approaches, Kripke notes many themes resonate with contemporary reality, revealing their awareness of political dynamics before they unfolded, and he acknowledges their earlier optimism in engaging with pressing social issues.
"It was really meant to be a celebrity satire, and it was going to be a satire of Hollywood," Kripke told Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau.
"Then Trump got elected. We had this observation of Huh, this is at the intersection of authoritarianism and celebrity."
"We wrote all that before the [2024] election," Kripke admits. "We had, in hindsight, naïve hopes."
