The Justice Department sues Maine and Oregon, ratcheting up demands for voter data
"If the President wants to use the DOJ to go after his political opponents and undermine our elections, I look forward to seeing them in court,"
"I stand by my oath to the people of Oregon, and I will protect their rights and privacy."
"States simply cannot pick and choose which federal laws they will comply with,"
"American citizens have a right to feel confident in the integrity of our electoral process, and the refusal of certain states to protect their citizens against vote dilution will result in legal consequences."
The Department of Justice filed lawsuits against Oregon and Maine and their secretaries of state to obtain full voter registration lists that include partial Social Security numbers. The DOJ contends those states have not provided complete answers or sufficient raw data to determine compliance with federal voter-list maintenance requirements. The suits follow DOJ requests to multiple states and mark the first instances of litigation after refusals. Oregon’s secretary said he will defend voter privacy and prepare to litigate, while the DOJ’s Civil Rights chief said states cannot selectively comply with federal election laws and warned of legal consequences.
