Trump repeated criticisms of Powell, including accusations of excessive spending on the Fed building renovation. Powell said on January 11 that the Fed had been served with grand jury subpoenas threatening criminal indictment and asserted those subpoenas were intended to force him to lower interest rates. Central bankers from multiple countries signed an open letter praising Powell as a respected colleague. Trump announced former Fed governor Kevin Warsh as his pick to succeed Powell in May.
