The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, recently modified by Senate Republicans, restricts provider taxes for Medicaid, worsening New York's healthcare sector. The Senate approved the bill by a narrow margin, with a tie-breaking vote from the Vice President. Critics, including Governor Kathy Hochul, claim it jeopardizes health coverage for millions, specifically signaling 1.5 million individuals at risk of losing insurance. The bill is projected to reduce funding by $8 billion, exacerbating issues in healthcare access and support in the state.
"Senate Republicans moved one step closer to ripping health care away from millions of Americans to pay for massive tax breaks for billionaires," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.
The state estimates 1.5 million people will lose their health insurance as a result of the bill. Hospital groups say the cumulative effects of the bill's provisions will eventually result in $8 billion less funding.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended the changes in a floor speech, stating, "We're looking at an exceedingly rare opportunity to root out waste, fraud, and abuse, including the first real entitlement reform in decades."
