"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"A 72,000 salary earned by some striking Tube workers is not enough to buy a house in London, a rail union boss has claimed. Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, was quizzed over the pay of London Underground workers amid a week-long strike, which has caused severe disruption in the capital. When asked on Times Radio on Wednesday if he thought 72,000 meant a worker was not well paid, Mr Dempsey replied: "Well, you can't afford to buy a house in London, even on 72,000." RMT members are taking part in the walk-out in a dispute over pay and hours with many Tube lines out of service, or heavily impacted by the industrial action."
The Independent covers a wide range of issues including reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech while producing investigative work and documentaries. The outlet emphasizes keeping reporting accessible without paywalls and seeks donations to fund journalists and on-the-ground reporting from multiple perspectives. Separately, RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said a £72,000 salary for some Tube workers does not enable house purchase in London. RMT members conducted a week-long strike over pay, hours and a demand for a four-day week, causing severe disruption across many Tube lines. Transport for London provided starting salary figures for drivers and station staff.
