At midday, the word 'independent' was removed, changing the description to 'A U.S. government agency overseen by Congress...' The change followed testimony by FCC Chair Brendan Carr during a Senate oversight hearing, when he stated, 'The FCC is not an independent agency, formally speaking.' Senator Ben Ray Luján produced a screenshot of the prior wording while questioning Carr. The FCC later issued a statement referencing the recent change in administration and updating website materials.
