"Hasbro abandoned the State, causing untold economic harm and loss of tax revenue,"
"There is no reason we should be advertising their products on our license plates."
"It may seem trivial compared to many other things, but it's a matter of self-respect."
"With additional federal cuts and policy changes on the horizon, the need will be greater than ever moving forward,"
Hasbro announced last year that it was shifting its headquarters to Boston. Rhode Island Reps. Brian Newberry and Thomas Noret introduced a bill to remove Mr. Potato Head specialty license plates, citing Hasbro's departure and lost tax revenue. Drivers who already purchased the plates would be allowed to keep them but could not transfer them to a new car or family member. The plates cost $40 and split proceeds evenly between the Division of Motor Vehicles and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. The food bank has raised more than $50,000 from the plates since 2002 and warned that demand for emergency food assistance is at historic highs and could grow with federal cuts.
