Hometown hero: Lower East Side street named for superhero co-creator Jack Kirby | amNewYork
"It's important that this is in New York City, Schwarz said. Kirby fans came not just from around the city, around the country, but from around the world. Jack Kirby was born Jacob Kurtzberg in 1917 and grew on the Lower East Side, at 147 Essex Street, now marked by a red door covered with graffiti down the block from the green street sign that now"
Hundreds of Jack Kirby fans gathered as the street where he grew up was closed and a sign was unveiled proclaiming Jack Kirby Way. The event honored the comic book illustrator who co-created many well-known heroes, including the Fantastic Four, Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, and Spider-Man. Pop culture historian Roy Schwartz led the effort, and Councilmember Christopher Marte shepherded it through the Council. The co-naming occurred 30 years after Kirby’s death in 1996, during growing recognition of comic creators’ roles and importance. The ceremony included Kirby’s family and featured fans in superhero costumes, Captain America shirts, and suits, with the honor placed near his birthplace on the Lower East Side.
