Remedy CEO steps down following FBC: Firebreak's disastrous launch
""Every single game is highly important for us," Virtala told The Verge. "There is no question that we are not fully insulated. But we are less dependent on any single game than we used to be.""
""initiate a search process for a new CEO immediately.""
""weak sales""
Tero Virtala has stepped down as Remedy Entertainment CEO effective immediately after the disappointing launch of FBC: Firebreak. Markus Mäki, chief product officer and co-founder, will serve as interim CEO while the company initiates a search for a permanent replacement. Virtala led Remedy since 2016 and guided its transition from a work-for-hire studio to a multi-project, self-publishing developer, including the releases of Control (2019) and the Alan Wake sequel (2023). Firebreak, a self-published live-service co-op spinoff intended to combine worldbuilding and multiplayer, failed to attract players and prompted a profit warning citing "weak sales." Remedy continues development on Control 2, Max Payne remasters, and a mystery game to diversify its portfolio.
