Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will feature a standalone narrative, distinct from previous Onimusha games and the Netflix series. Producer Akihito Kadowaki emphasized the desire for both longtime fans and newcomers to start with the same storyline, allowing a shared experience. The game introduces a new protagonist, Miyamoto Mushashi, modeled after actor Toshiro Mifune, and focuses on fighting Genma, just like earlier entries. However, it is confirmed that there is no connection to the Netflix show, even if they share some character similarities.
The main reason we wanted to do that is we wanted not only the fans of the series, but also new players, to start at the same place with the story.
There's absolutely no connection with the Netflix animated series.
