"This is the second year in a row that he has started training camp nursing an injury. Head coach Spencer Carbery called Ovechkin "nicked up" this time last year, and earlier Russian reporting had revealed Ovechkin missed Sergei Mozyakin's farewell KHL game due to a minor knee injury. Ovechkin then went on to play in three preseason games, taking a maintenance day between the first and second games. He later broke his left leg in November, forcing him out of 16 regular-season games."

Alex Ovechkin exited the Washington Capitals' first 2025-26 training camp skate early to be evaluated for a lower-body injury. The exact nature of the injury was not immediately evident, and Ovechkin did not participate in the Thursday skate test. Ovechkin recently returned from spending most of the summer in Russia and rejoined teammates at an informal skate on September 9. This marks the second consecutive year Ovechkin has begun camp with an injury; he previously suffered a broken left leg in November that cost him 16 regular-season games. Ovechkin is three goals from 900 career goals and nine games from 1,500 games, all with the Capitals. While he sat out, the rest of the team completed on-ice drills at Capitals MedStar Iceplex, and the last round of skate tests will occur before the new CBA bans them after this season.
