Nicklas Backstrom is anticipated to officially return to his first professional team, Brynäs IF, with a press conference scheduled for Monday to announce a one-year deal. Backstrom's final contract with the Washington Capitals expired on July 1, after he spent the entire 2024-25 season on long-term injured reserve. He has not played since October 2023 due to complications from a surgically-repaired hip. Before joining the Capitals, Backstrom played for Brynäs, scoring 66 points in 110 games from 2004 to 2007 in the Swedish Elite League.
