President Trump signed an executive order transferring jurisdiction of a 60-foot-wide buffer zone, across New Mexico, Arizona, and California, to the Department of Defense. This area, previously managed by the Department of the Interior, will be utilized to implement increased patrols and security measures to combat illegal cross-border activities. Initially, soldiers will conduct patrols and erect temporary barriers, after which the area may be established as a permanent national defense zone under Army jurisdiction for three years.
"Our southern border is under attack from a variety of threats. The complexity of the current situation requires that our military take a more direct role in securing our southern border than in the recent past."
"The Army requested the jurisdiction transfer to increase patrols by federal personnel and implement security measures and infrastructure to curb illegal cross-border activities, like illegal immigration and drug and human trafficking."
