The happiest time of life is as you get older': can positive thinking help you age better?
"According to a US study, those attitudes can meaningfully change someone's ageing trajectory. People with more positive attitudes to ageing not only did better at things like walking speed, memory tests and maths than those with more negative attitudes but a significant number of them actually improved over the study's timeframe."
"Even Levy, who has been studying age beliefs and their impact for much of her career, was surprised at how significant the benefits were of having a positive attitude. Many people have examples in their own lives or can point to people that do show improvement in later life."
Prof Velandai Srikanth, a geriatrician, highlights the stigma of ageing and its impact on perceptions of older adults. Research by Prof Becca Levy shows that positive attitudes towards ageing can lead to better physical and cognitive performance. In a study of over 11,000 individuals aged 50 to 99, those with optimistic views on ageing demonstrated improvements in walking speed and memory over 12 years. Surprisingly, 44% of participants showed enhancements in these areas, challenging the notion that decline is inevitable with age.
