The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-black female unit to serve overseas in WWII, received the Congressional Gold Medal for their remarkable contributions to mail delivery in 1945. Tasked with clearing a backlog of 17 million undelivered mail pieces, they accomplished the task in just three months, far surpassing expectations. This recognition came through a unanimous congressional vote in 2022 after years of advocacy. Only two original members remain alive, and the award honors their significant yet overlooked legacy as trailblazers in military history.
"These women and the entire Six Triple Eight are great American patriots; loyal to a nation that for far too long failed to return that favor."
"Today, in the people's house, we add to that incredible story ... Their story will never be forgotten."
