His attorney, Teodosio Jáquez, later said there was confusion over the incident and that the money was found. Franco, however, rejected his attorney's remarks and insisted the money had been stolen. Wander Franco, a suspended Tampa Bay Rays shortstop convicted of sexually abusing a minor, was detained by police and admitted to a private clinic in Baní for mental health treatment at his family's request. Authorities indicated the clinic admittance is not linked to legal matters. Franco publicly alleged $16,000 was stolen from a resort; his attorney later said the money was found, but Franco disputed that account. Franco received a two-year suspended sentence in June for a relationship with a 14-year-old and payments to the girl's mother. He faces a separate pending firearm charge and remains on the MLB restricted list.
