California trauma surgeon Feroze Sidhwa told the paper he initially assumed the cases were isolated until he encountered multiple boys in one hospital, all shot directly in the head. Later, when he compared notes with other international doctors, he realised it was widespread. This is targeted fire. Someone is pulling a trigger on a child, he said."

Many victims died and survivors suffered devastating injuries. Forensic pathologists reviewed X-rays and determined wounds consistent with long-range sniper or drone fire rather than shrapnel from explosions. Several clinicians observed multiple boys in one hospital with direct head shots and characterized the pattern as targeted fire. A prior investigation identified over 160 children shot, 95 hit in the head or chest, most under 12.
