Several prominent reformist politicians were arrested in Iran as authorities expanded a crackdown after mass anti-government protests erupted in late December. The detained include Ebrahim Asqarzadeh, Mohsen Aminzadeh, Azar Mansuri, and Javad Emam. Security forces used force to suppress weekslong nationwide protests that human rights groups say killed several thousand people. State-affiliated Mizan news agency alleged the detainees acted in the interests of Israel and the United States and accused them of trying to destroy national cohesion through false accusations. Mansuri led the Reformist Front and advised former president Mohammad Khatami; Aminzadeh and Asqarzadeh are former senior officials.
