"The Malagasy nation needs bold decisions. We are now at a turning point. This country needs a person of integrity, a person of principle, incorruptible and who cannot be bought with money."
"Since 2021, Rajaonarison has led the Financial Intelligence Unit (SAMIFIN), which combats illicit financial flows, money laundering and terrorism financing. Prior to that he held a number of senior roles at Madagascar's Anti-Corruption Bureau (BIANCO)."
Madagascar's President Michael Randrianirina appointed Mamitiana Rajaonarison as the country's new prime minister following the dismissal of the previous prime minister and cabinet. Randrianirina emphasized the need for bold decisions and integrity in leadership, citing the nation's turning point. Rajaonarison, who has led the Financial Intelligence Unit since 2021 and previously held senior positions at Madagascar's Anti-Corruption Bureau, will oversee the government during a period of uncertainty. Interim President Randrianirina, a colonel who assumed power following Gen Z protests in October, has pledged reforms and closer ties with Russia, with plans for national consultations in 2026 to draft a new constitution and presidential elections scheduled for late 2027.
