Malawi is holding presidential, parliamentary, and local elections amid a deepening economic crisis, double-digit inflation, and soaring food prices. Last year’s region-wide drought devastated harvests, and Cyclone Freddy in 2023 killed more than 1,000 people and destroyed livelihoods. Some 7.2 million people are registered to vote across 35 local government authorities. A presidential candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a run-off, with presidential results due by September 24. Voters will also elect 299 constituency members of parliament and 509 councillors, with parliamentary results due by September 30. Seventeen presidential candidates are contesting, with the contest largely seen as between Lazarus Chakwera and Peter Mutharika. Malawi has 21.6 million people, capital Lilongwe, commercial centre Blantyre, and is known for Lake Malawi and wildlife parks.
