The boat, carrying 154 Ethiopian migrants, capsized in the Gulf of Aden near Abyan province. The International Organisation for Migration reported that 54 bodies washed ashore and 14 were found dead. Only 12 survivors were rescued. Despite the dangers, the route remains heavily used by migrants.

Despite Yemen's decade of civil war, it remains a crucial route for migrants from east Africa and the Horn of Africa seeking work in Gulf Arab countries.
Over the past several months, numerous shipwrecks off Yemen have caused hundreds of deaths or disappearances, raising urgent concerns regarding migrant safety.
