Ceremonial acts included lowering the Australian flag, raising the PNG flag, a Royal Australian Air Force flypast and a 50-gun salute by the PNG Defence Force. Nationwide events marked the Golden Jubilee. Papua New Guinea has an estimated population of about 11 million, making it the most populous Pacific nation after Australia.
