She could die any moment': Jana, 8, awaits urgent evacuation from Gaza
"In recent photos, Jana Ayyad is curled up in a ball, her face covered with her hands. Sometimes, the emaciated eight-year-old sobs, crying out for her father, who has been marooned outside Gaza since the war started 23 months ago. Jana is on the brink of death. Her only hope is a medical evacuation from Gaza so that she can receive treatment abroad."
"Over the last month, her body has begun to swell, a hallmark of malnutrition and acidosis. The doctor told me bluntly: Your daughter's condition is bad; at any moment you could lose her,' said Nesma Ayyad, Jana's mother. Two months ago, Jana's two--year-old sister Joury was taken to hospital after suddenly developing a sickness where her skin peeled and bled. Within a month she had died."
An eight-year-old girl in Gaza, Jana Ayyad, suffers severe malnutrition complicated by acidosis, swelling and life-threatening deterioration that local doctors cannot fully treat due to lack of supplies. Her condition rapidly worsened after her two-year-old sister developed a sudden, fatal illness in which her skin peeled and bled. The family applied for medical evacuation to Jordan and awaits Israeli approval; exit from Gaza requires security clearance and a country willing to receive the patient. Only two of eleven children in the same batch had been cleared so far, while officials gave differing accounts of the application status.
