Somalia: Mogadishu vote marks return of universal suffrage DW 12/25/2025
"This is my first time to vote,"
"I am very happy and I came here early in the morning, walking with other mothers,"
"shows Somalia is standing on its feet and moving forward,"
"After the local election, elections can and will take place in the entire country."
More than 10,000 security personnel were deployed across Mogadishu as hundreds of thousands of voters were expected for Somalia’s first direct local election in decades. The vote reintroduced one-person, one-vote in the capital, with over 1,600 candidates from up to 20 political parties contesting local seats in a city of about three million. Officials closed the airport and blocked streets to boost security amid threats from the al-Shabab insurgency. Universal suffrage was legally restored last year after decades of clan-based power sharing, and the vote had been delayed three times in 2025.
