The United Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine to preserve the future possibility of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The UK calls for the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas and declares that Hamas must have no role in future governance of Gaza or a Palestinian state. The UK will sanction additional Hamas leaders and criticized the Israeli government's conduct in the Gaza war, urging an end and demanding lifting of unacceptable border restrictions. France, Canada, and Australia are moving toward recognition. An international peace conference in New York is organized by France and Saudi Arabia in support of a two-state solution.
