Unification Church leader arrested in S Korean ex-first lady bribery case

Han Hak-ja, 82, leader of the Unification Church, has been arrested after a Seoul prosecution office issued an arrest warrant citing concern she could tamper with evidence. She is accused of ordering church staff to deliver luxury gifts to former First Lady Kim Keon Hee to secure favors for church business interests, and of bribing a prominent MP with 100 million won. Han denies the allegations as false. Han was remanded to Seoul Detention Centre. The Unification Church said it accepts the court decision, will cooperate with investigations, and apologised for causing concern. The church, founded in 1954, remains controversial with followers called Moonies.
