Police in Chenghua launched an investigation on 18 January after public reports that online accounts spread a false claim that two male Sichuan giant pandas had mated in the wild. Two men, Dong, 29, from Huludao, and Gao, 33, from Hangzhou, were identified and found to have deliberately distorted facts by fabricating a news screenshot titled "Chengdu: two male Sichuan giant pandas successfully mate in the wild for the first time." The men allegedly posted the fake news to attract attention; authorities said the posts caused widespread false interpretations, disrupted online order and produced negative social impact. The men were administratively detained and their accounts shut down. Male giant pandas in Chenghua were not engaging in same-sex activity. A study in Nature Ecology & Evolution documented same-sex activity in 59 nonhuman primate species and suggested such behaviour evolved to reduce conflict and build bonds.
