Russia has begun direct commercial flights to North Korea, indicating closer relations with its Asian ally amidst ongoing military operations in Ukraine. The first flight from Moscow to Pyongyang, operated by Nordwind Airlines, is scheduled to occur monthly, costing approximately 45,000 rubles. This event marks the first direct link between the capitals in over 70 years of diplomatic relations. Russia and North Korea have previously signed a mutual defense pact and restored train connections after a pandemic-induced suspension, with North Korea reportedly contributing troops to Russia's military efforts in Ukraine.
This is a historical event, strengthening the ties between our nations, said Oleg, a Nordwind employee managing the flight.
For the first time in more than 70 years of diplomatic relations, we are launching direct flights between the capitals of our countries, said Russia's deputy transport minister.
North Korea confirmed for the first time in April that it had deployed a contingent of its soldiers to the frontline in Ukraine.
Russia and North Korea restored train links on June 17 after suspending them in 2020 during the Covid pandemic.
