Several Western countries say they will join more than 145 UN members that already recognize a Palestinian state. Recent European recognitions followed an Israeli military campaign in Gaza blamed for tens of thousands of deaths, with different counts reported. The UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Israel and the United States reject such findings and argue recognition would reward terror after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.
