Basic Space: Designed for Calm, Built for Community
"The materials set the tone. They're honest and tactile, the concrete underfoot, the texture of the plaster, the softness of the linen. We wanted every space to contribute to a feeling of uplifting calm."
"It's not like an 'okay, in and out, see you later' kind of place. The lounge-like area provides an opportunity to lounge before class or linger after."
Basic Space in Camberwell, South London, is designed to be a welcoming yoga studio that alleviates feelings of intimidation. Established by Jaime Hepburn, the studio emphasizes a neighborhood practice. Architect Matt Hepburn created a warm environment using materials like frosted glass, polished concrete, and organic plaster. The reception area is bright and serene, featuring a sculptural check-in desk and a lounge area that encourages relaxation. The design aims to create a calming atmosphere, making it a space where individuals can feel comfortable and connected.
