Columbia's leadership has shown a stark change in commitment to scholarly activities and respect for academic freedom. Conversations with faculty indicate that what was once a supportive environment has shifted possibly due to capitulation to federal pressures. Columbia's failure to legally challenge federal funding withdrawals reflects a broader trend among university leaders who have abandoned core academic principles. The previously supportive administration could be persuaded to advocate for faculty and students, but now there is significant concern regarding their authority and fidelity to the university's mission.
Conversations with faculty colleagues over the past year and a half have suggested to me that a real and substantial change has in fact happened.
Columbia's leaders need to be reminded of the point of scholarship and teaching, activities they have typically given up or not engaged in at all.
