A Lackluster '80s Fireplace Got a Bold, Cozy Redo - with Zero White Paint
""The cheap built-in cabinets around the fireplace were asymmetrical in the worst way possible. The fireplace was a very lackluster basic red brick, no dimension or interesting texture to it.""
""The day I closed on the house, I ripped all of the carpet out of the entire house. It had to go before I could even think about how I wanted to design the space.""
""I tore out the ugly brass insert and painted the entire fireplace white, but the look just really wasn't doing anything for me. I had a vision in my head of this moody and cozy living room.""
""I used fast-drying concrete to smooth over the brick on the fireplace below the mantel; I left a bit of texture behind to accentuate the concrete.""
Jared Ashby renovated a living room fireplace that was an eyesore, featuring outdated elements from the 1960s. He removed the old carpet and built-in shelves, revealing hardwood floors in need of refinishing. After an initial unsuccessful attempt to paint the fireplace white, he opted for a bolder approach. He applied fast-drying concrete to the brick, leaving some texture, and painted the lower part matte black, achieving the moody and cozy aesthetic he envisioned.
