archstudio revives courtyard tradition with timber-framed guesthouse in beijing
Briefly

ARCHSTUDIO has designed Lei Homestay, a guesthouse in North Yangjiaqiao Village, Beijing, on a 400-square-meter site that features three family trees. The architecture embraces traditional courtyard aesthetics while utilizing contemporary laminated timber frameworks. The building is thoughtfully segmented, with solid brick walls ensuring privacy and open social spaces that welcome natural light. Prefabricated elements were employed to maximize the site’s potential within regulatory constraints, resulting in a harmonious balance between modern hospitality and the village’s organic environment.
The architecture of Lei Homestay is structured around three cherished family trees, embodying a contemporary take on the traditional courtyard typology.
Using prefabricated timber construction allowed the architects to double the site's volume while respecting the surrounding village scale and restrictions.
