House M / Atelier About Architecture
Briefly

House M in Beijing embodies a blend of nostalgia and modern design, inspired by the homeowner's childhood memories of low-rise buildings and greenery. The unique site dynamics—characterized by high walls and limited natural light—led architects to create five courtyards that enhance daylight access and visual connectivity throughout the home. This innovative spatial strategy allows for intimate family interactions while establishing a versatile environment that shifts perceptions as one moves through the spaces, effectively harmonizing tradition with contemporary architectural sensibilities.
The design seeks to establish a new spatial system submerged beneath the tall enclosing walls, focusing on horizontal layering by introducing five courtyards of varying scales.
The homeowner’s childhood memories of low-rise buildings and tree canopies shape the home’s character, providing both nostalgia and emotional depth in its architectural layout.
