One of Erith's oldest pubs is getting a major revamp but 'character won't change'
Briefly

The Royal Oak pub on Bexley Road, established since the 1860s, is undergoing a major renovation while remaining open. The six-figure refurbishment includes refitting all three bars and upgrading outdoor areas. Manager Hazel Southwell aims to keep the pub's community spirit intact, enhancing its offerings with a new kitchen and family-friendly meals. The renovation also seeks to revive live music and beer festivals, reasserting the Royal Oak's role as a local cultural hub. The aim is to blend modern dining with historic roots, keeping the pub central to community life.
This refurbishment will breathe new life into the pub, not change its character. It's a historic building and a proper community boozer and that won't change.
We want to add food, especially for families because it's the number one thing we're asked for. Doing good, hearty meals well and for a decent price is important to us.
If you look at maps from the 1800s, then the Royal Oak is at the heart of the community, and we want to put it firmly back there.
I've had a lot of interest in beer festivals ever since we brought back real ale. We have such an incredible amount of space at this pub.
