Architect Youngbae Kim of DRAWING WORKS has renovated a 50-year-old farmhouse in Goam-dong, Korea, transforming it into Gorami House. Emphasizing its historical elements, Kim preserves and enhances the irregularities of the original timber structure, introducing subtle adjustments and a new roofline that mimics surrounding mountain ridges. The homeowners chose restoration over demolition to maintain connections to their family heritage. The renovation showcases a blend of tradition and modernity, utilizing light, material, and thoughtful design to create a space that respects the past while meeting contemporary needs.
Instead of erasing the past, Youngbae Kim amplifies it by framing, preserving, and, in some cases, patching crooked pine rafters... with discreet interventions.
The design began with a conversation over sweet potatoes and omija tea in the winter sun, in a meeting of generations that set the tone for what would follow.
