A second-rounder in the 2023 draft, Sproat made it all the way to Triple-A during his first pro season last year and this year has spent the entire season at the level. In 26 appearances (25 starts) with Syracuse this year, he's posted a 4.24 ERA with a 22.1% strikeout rate across 121 innings of work. Sproat joins Nolan McLean and as pitching prospects who have come up to help impact the club down the stretch.
That does not mean Sproat's hopes of making the majors this season have ended. While he is not on the 40-man roster following the Sept. 1 deadline, which suggests he would be ineligible for the postseason as well, the 24-year-old right-hander can still get to the big leagues as an injury replacement, considering he was in the organization prior to Aug. 31.
Brandon Sproat, one of the New York Mets' top pitching prospects, was switched to a bullpen role during his regularly scheduled appearance on Sunday with Triple-A Syracuse, potentially foreshadowing a call-up to the majors. The 24-year-old right-hander has been lights-out as of late in the minors, posting a 2.05 ERA with 57 strikeouts and a 0.850 WHIP across his last nine starts (48.1 innings pitched).
Brandon Sproat is making it nearly impossible for the Mets to keep him down in the minors for much longer. The 24-year-old has hit his stride with Triple-A Syracuse after a bobble upon his promotion from Double-A Binghamton. He went six innings on Tuesday night, allowing just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts. Over his last nine starts (48.1 innings pitched), he has a 2.05 ERA with 57 strikeouts and a 0.850 WHIP.
Since July 1, his ERA has ballooned to 5.09. From the start, many wondered if he would be able to hold up over an entire season. His late-season decline shows he still needs to build his arm strength. However, fortunately for New York, he was once an elite reliever, and he can make the transition back far easier than most starting pitchers.
