Marvel takes an admirable risk with Wonder Man, an eight-episode Disney+ original series, by tabling grandiose superhero action set pieces fans love and playing up inside-baseball jokes, a la Seth Rogen's The Studio. That move might well turn off traditionalists who crave nonstop action and CGI-heavy smackdowns, but it is a refreshing change of pace to see Marvel take its brake off the gas to allow for more character-driven storytelling that is reliant on the chemistry of its two leads.

Throughout the events of Promise Mascot Agency, I was Pinky's ride. Anywhere that she needed to go, I had to ferry her in my crappy little truck. As a matter of fact, I was responsible for the transport of any and every mascot that stumbled through the doors of the Promise Mascot Agency and came under my employ. When Kofun needed to go to a nearby graveyard, I was the guy for the job.

Taken from the Faustian play The Witch of Edmonton, written in 1621 by William Rowley, Thomas Dekker, and John Ford, Silverman's story, directed by Hecht for Profile Theatre, explores what happens when a devil named Scratch (Joshua J. Weinstein) comes to Edmonton and tries to tempt the villagers into trading their souls in exchange for their secret desires. What Cuddy Banks (Charles Grant) wants is the freedom to pursue his beloved Morris dancing ... and to finally receive some unconditional love and respect from his father, Sir Arthur Banks (George Mount).

While the premise may sound on paper like the setup for a loud, crude 00s comedy, this is a much more finely tuned piece of work than that, with engaging characters and an impeccably calibrated plot full of plausible twists and turns that are wild yet still realistic.
