The representation I was looking for—solemn and beautiful—came later in university from writers like Edmund White and James Baldwin; in my teens, I felt alone.

What I understood from a young age is that art and exercise went hand in hand and that muscle was beautiful in form and function.

To write about Venice, a city that has so eloquently expressed itself throughout history, is a challenge I’m both drawn to and often fail at.
