We were called at 10.36am today (12 June) to reports of a road traffic collision in Purley Way, Croydon. We sent an ambulance crew.

Alessio Martinelli crashed during the Giro d'Italia's stage 16, sliding off the road into a ravine. Fortunately, he was conscious and taken to hospital.

After nearly two hours of argument, a judge agreed the issue was moot under New Jersey criminal law, upholding all charges against the driver, including manslaughter.

"We are always encouraging people to be out and about and active and then this awful tragedy happened. I passed the scene earlier and there are a lot of flowers and balloons where people have been trying to come together to show their support for the family. It's hard to comprehend it all," he added. "No parent should ever have to have a funeral for a child," he said.
